the cook, the thief, his wife and her lover

written and directed by Peter Greenaway

This film is really intense. If you’re not in a good place I do not recommend it. But if you are in a good place
and have an appetite for theatre, luxury, abuse and loud talking then this is for you. Superb design and stellar
performances.

My pal Brendan McFadden has one of my favorite blogs. He recently recommended GIRLFRIENDS (1978) a film by Claudia Weill. It’s spectacular. If you can get your hands on a copy, do! I rarely miss New York when I see it in film or photographs but something about this picture transplanted me back to sunnier times.

Quoted from CityPLanning:
Despite being lauded by Stanley Kubrick and enjoying relative succcess upon its initial release, GIRLFRIENDS was for many years largely forgotten. A real shame as it’s terrific, a subtly moving and funny evocation of those initial post collegiate years when you’re trying not so successfully to figure out what you want and who you are while circumstances and relationships are changing and shifting all around you.

your weekend in New York:

One of my favorite people, Robbie Pickering, has a film opening this weekend. It premiered at SXSW last year and won nearly every award. It’s his first feature and it’s truly a gem. If you’re in New York you must must go see it. The performances are excellent and the writing is truly transplendent.
